Who We Are

Busitema University is a public multi-campus institution established by the Government of Uganda under Statutory Instrument No. 22 of 2007, in accordance with the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, 2001. The University was founded to expand access to quality higher education and to contribute to national development through teaching, research, innovation, and community engagement.

The University officially opened its doors to students in October 2007 and adopted a unique multi-campus model that brought together several well-established tertiary institutions across Eastern Uganda. This approach enabled the University to build on the rich heritage, infrastructure, and expertise of existing institutions while responding to the growing demand for university education in science, technology, agriculture, health sciences, education, natural resources, and management sciences.

Today, Busitema University operates across campuses in Busia, Tororo, Soroti, Kamuli, Mbale, Pallisa, and Butebo districts, each with a distinct historical foundation and academic specialisation.

Busitema Campus – Busia District

Busitema Campus, the University's main campus and administrative headquarters, traces its origins to the Busitema National College of Agricultural Mechanization. Established with technical support from the former Soviet Union, the college was created to train skilled personnel in agricultural mechanization, farm machinery operation, irrigation, and related technical fields. The institution played a significant role in supporting Uganda's agricultural modernization efforts.

Upon the establishment of Busitema University in 2007, the facilities of Busitema, National College of Agricultural Mechanization became the foundation of the University's Faculty of Engineering and Technology. The campus continues to uphold its tradition of practical and technology-oriented education, particularly in engineering, irrigation, mechanization, and innovation.

Nagongera Campus – Tororo District

Nagongera Campus was formerly the National Teachers' College (NTC) Nagongera, one of Uganda's leading teacher-training institutions. For decades, the college trained secondary school teachers who served in schools across the country and contributed significantly to the development of the education sector. When Busitema University was established, NTC Nagongera became the home of the Faculty of Science and Education. The campus has maintained its strong educational heritage while expanding into science, technology, and educational research, producing graduates equipped to meet the evolving needs of the education sector.

Arapai Campus – Soroti City Arapai

Campus has its roots in the former Arapai Agricultural College, one of the oldest agricultural training institutions in Eastern Uganda. The college was renowned for training agricultural extension workers, instructors, and farm managers who supported agricultural development throughout the region. Its incorporation into Busitema University strengthened the University's commitment to agricultural education, research, and innovation. Today, the campus serves as the centre for agricultural and animal sciences, contributing to food security and sustainable agricultural development.

Namasagali Campus – Kamuli District

Namasagali Campus is situated along the banks of the River Nile in Kamuli District. The campus occupies facilities associated with the historic Namasagali educational institutions, which have long been recognized for academic excellence. Its strategic location within a rich ecological environment makes it an ideal centre for the study of natural resources, environmental management, fisheries, and water resources. The campus currently hosts programmes that support sustainable management of natural resources and environmental conservation.

Mbale Campus – Mbale City

Mbale Campus is home to the Faculty of Health Sciences and serves as a key centre for medical education and health research. The campus was established through collaboration with Mbale Regional Referral Hospital, providing students with access to practical clinical training and community-based healthcare experiences. Since its establishment, the campus has played an important role in addressing the need for highly skilled health professionals in Uganda and the wider region.

Pallisa Campus – Pallisa District

Pallisa Campus hosts the Faculty of Management Sciences. The campus was established as part of the University's expansion strategy to diversify academic programmes and strengthen training in business, entrepreneurship, leadership, and public administration. The campus contributes to the development of professionals capable of supporting economic growth, institutional management, and public service delivery at local, national, and regional levels.

Kabwangasi Campus – Butebo District

Kabwangasi Campus, located in Butebo District, is the newest addition to Busitema University. The campus was formerly Kabwangasi Primary Teachers' College, one of Uganda's oldest teacher-training institutions, established in 1934. Over the years, the college trained thousands of teachers who served communities throughout the country and contributed significantly to the development of primary education. In 2024, the Government of Uganda transferred the institution to Busitema University as part of broader reforms in teacher education. The acquisition of the campus marked an important milestone in the University's growth and commitment to expanding access to higher education. The campus is expected to support the development of health sciences and other strategic academic programmes that align with national development priorities.

The history of Busitema University is a story of growth, transformation, and the preservation of institutional heritage. By integrating some of Eastern Uganda's most distinguished tertiary institutions into a single university system, Busitema University has built a strong foundation for academic excellence, innovation, and community impact. Today, the University continues to pursue its mission of providing transformative education, advancing research and innovation, and contributing to sustainable development in Uganda and beyond, while remaining guided by its motto: "Pursuing Excellence."
